I call Kansas City home. My journey toward surface pattern design is a long and winding road. I have always loved fabrics and patterns but also literature. How things fit together always draws me in, in both the written word and in visual arts and design. I graduated with a degree in English Literature but quickly found opportunity as a buyer in the world of construction and design in the hospitality industry and never looked back. This was my training ground and helped me see how design works up close and personal.
I spent 25+ years in various segments of the hospitality and design community wearing many hats. First, as a buyer, then as a design consultant, product designer, sales professional, account manager, and project manager. I worked on design projects for my own company and others. My own company produced a line of outdoor pillows made from Sunbrella fabric, Duralee, Perennials, and other well known fabric brands. I also did some custom design work for clients creating and outfitting outdoor spaces with furniture and fabric. Love of nature was always the driving force behind my work but, while well received, it never produced enough income to allow me the opportunity to leave my day job behind.
As I continued to work my day job the desire to pursue my own creative goals became more and more intense and I focused on finding a way to make that happen. I was introduced to Surface Pattern Design and it opened up a whole new world. I knew that I wanted to create my own pattern designs that could be used for my own products as well as those of other makers and manufacturers. With that end in mind I began to teach myself with the help of online sites like Skillshare, You Tube Videos, and really any other tutorials I could find. Slowly, I began to see a path that was possible.
I left the corporate world behind in 2022 and am now fulfilling a long time dream, working as a Surface Pattern Designer, specializing in textiles and wallpaper, under my own company, Badalucco Design Studio.
My blog, Sage Garden Style, has lots of inspirational content that I have created over many years related to Home, Garden, and Health topics where I explore the connection between design, health, and wellness and the important role of nature in our lives.
I now use it primarily for a more in depth look into my own design process and how love of nature fuels that inspiration along with ways that my work can help you add patterns that create a sense of natural surroundings in your own spaces. My tagline, Design & Decor Inspired by Nature, is my North Star.
